Texas Heat and Family Photos

With everything the way it is in the world right now, I have so many clients setting up their family session this summer to avoid another potential shut down. But since we live in Texas, the heat can be a huge factor. If we are lucky enough to get an overcast day blow through and cool things off, that helps, but I honestly prefer a sunny day. So what do we do?!

Tips for Taking Pictures in the Texas Heat

• Try to schedule a sunrise session. I know it can be early and hard to make it happen, but it’s one day you have to get up early. Plus, most children do better in the morning and now you look amazing to start off your day! Beat the heat and get up with the sun!

• Layer your outfits. If you have a specific look you are aiming for, or you want to have a “fall” look, I suggest staring in layers. You can quickly take them off after you have taken a few initial photos, or leave them on if the heat isn’t so bad.

• Pack snacks and water. Stay hydrated and take frequent breaks.

• Pick a location that has a lot of shade, one that has water, or ask if there is a rest room so you can retreat to the AC between takes.

• Accept and embrace the unpredictable. It can be hard to take family photos no matter what- add heat to the mixture and you may see more breakdowns for your kids. Embrace it and look for opportunities to just snuggle or play. Often the best moments are the unposed and unplanned ones.
