Every year Houston grows and expands…like a living breathing entity all of it’s own, the city expands. Since beginning my career over 10 years ago, locations I used to use or shoot at have become homes, office buildings, restaurants- you name it. And every year I must get more and more creative to find the best spots for my clients.
Once the summer heat sets in, we begin to retreat inside unless the activity involves water. That is where some of my all time favorite sessions get to shine: creek sessions.
Let’s dive into all the reasons you should consider going to the creek for your next photo session!
Back to Nature
There is something so natural about going to the creek- the moment your feet hit the sand, the urge to kick off your shoes is nearly impossible to ignore. What is better than bare baby feet, and your children exploring? When was the last family hike you took or nature trail you walked? This is it, friends. A real chance to get back to nature.
Cool Down
Why go to the creek if you don’t plan to get in? This darling family is one of my favorites- they are always down for an adventure. The creek was more full at this visit, but they were eager to cool off and enjoy the water. Just do it- get some of the photos out of the way that you are really wanting (think everyone looking at the camera and smiling before everyone is soaked). And then just do it! Plus, it’s Houston, it’s hot…get in that water!
Bonus: the water feels good on those pregnant feet and belly!
More Candid Moments
The fun of the creek is it makes more space to play. I love having built in opportunities for the individual personalities of your children to shine through, as well as space to slow down. Often, we look at photo sessions as structured time to pose and smile at the camera. But for me, the goal is always to capture your spirits FIRST and foremost. The creek is a unique spot where you can let loose and make space for your family to relax and let who they are shine.
No matter what location you choose for your maternity photos, it is important to find one that matches your vision for your photos. All of my locations lend themselves to wide open spaces but some more than others. Let your photographer know what you are looking for. Be open and ready to embrace nature as you explore wherever you go to! Feet to the earth, children at your side, and clear eyes ready to make memories!
