What to Wear for Family Photos- Mom Edition

“When you look into your mother’s eyes, you know that is the purest love you can find on this earth.” – Mitch Albom

I simply adore this family and I think they styled everyone so perfectly, I just had to share! A lot of the time, Mom is the one booking the photo session and setting everything up. I often find, once you have booked your session, you’re left going, “now what? What to wear, how to coordinate everyone?!“

So, Mom, I am talking to you! Start with YOU first!

When was the last time you did that anyway? Seriously…at the end of the day, I know you have a vision and it does not include you feeling bad about yourself or leaving your outfit until the very end. Take some time to stop and think about what you want. How do you want to feel when you look back at these images? I’m sure you have something for your children already in the closet that can be used to coordinate with what you select. And if you don’t, that is ok too! But start with your outfit first.

Ashley’s 5 Tips For Moms

  • Maxi dresses are flattering on every body type.
Keep that in mind while shopping! (Maxi dresses are usually a slam dunk for shoots, and they’re so versatile. Add a belt or a statement necklace with strappy sandals for the summer, or a cardigan and a scarf in the fall.) Not a fan of dresses? Try a maxi skirt for a boho, romantic feel that can be dressed up or down.

  • Skinny jeans rock those curves and look sooooo good!
If a dress doesn’t feel like you, or isn’t the vision you are going for, that’s ok! Skinny jeans to the rescue! Pair them with cute heels or wedges to make your legs look a mile long. If you don’t feel comfortable with the tighter fit, I recommend a fit called “skinny boot cut.” (You can find them at American Eagle, Gap).

  • Take a friend shopping with you.
Bring along the bestie! They will see you better than you see yourself when trying on clothes. If he/she tells you it looks great, believe them! We’re our own worst critics.

  • Flaunt your best asset.
I’m self conscious about my stomach and upper arms but I like my legs. So, I feel most comfortable in a maxi dress with 3/4 length sleeves- it’s just my look! You know what feels good and looks good on you, so at the end of the day, wear what is comfortable. Don’t try to force anything or dress in a way that is out of character for you. Sure, most of the time we don’t dress up every day, but for pictures it’s ok to look good (‘cause it makes you feel good!) and still find your personal voice.

If you need some inspiration or just want to see an adorable family, keep scrolling! Mom picked a neutral maxi dress with a floral pattern, and then found her daughters darling dress at H&M, puling in some bold pops of color. For her son, she was able to pull her daughters dress color in with adorable accessories and the cutest bow tie ever! Dad came in with a dark complimenting gray and together, it all just rocks!
