How To Prepare For Family Photos

The Woodlands Family Photographer | Ashley Newman Photography

The last time I got this sweet boy in front of my camera, he was turning a year old, and shoving chunky fist-fulls of cake into his mouth. How the time goes so quickly. Today he is an independent, caring, sweet boy who is busy exploring the world and basically a soccer super star. Breathe in, breathe out. But don’t blink, mama, for it all goes too quickly.

Friend, I know it can be hard to get in front of the camera. It’s a lot of work to plan a family photo session for your children and husband, not to mention show up looking and feeling your best as well! If you are anything like me, you are normally the one taking the pictures, not posing for them. So I understand it can be a little intimidating and stressful to organize it all.

The Main family is just like you and me. Renee runs her own business and chases her precious Euen all day. Her hubby works and provides for his family. A typical day at their house normally involves loads of snack crumbs, a skinned knee, soccer outside and more snuggles and love than you can shake a stick at. To say I feel utterly comfortable in their home is an understatement: they are down-to-earth, honest-to-goodness, good people.
And they pulled off an effortless family photo session!

How did they exude confidence and finish their session with everyone smiling?

Wardrobe: Renee put herself first. She planned her outfit before anyone else. When she felt comfortable and like she looked good in her clothing, she started to plan everyone else. She also took the time to schedule hair and makeup.

Collaborator: The Mains considered themselves partners in creating memories of their family. There will be times when the photographer wants you to engage with them, but there are other times when the photographer is simply observing. They used that time to be themselves and enjoy the their children. The result is natural, honest connections.

Experience: They didn’t anticipate the end result. Instead, they embraced whatever the feeling was at the moment (and with toddlers, you know that feeling can change multiple times in just a few short minutes). They were fully present with their children and that made for the best memories.

It really can be that simple! It’s too stressful to try to control the situation, or fuss over things that cannot be changed. Instead, embrace where your family is now, and let the rest unfold into your beautiful and unique story.
