Is December A Good Month For Family Photos?

Best Month For Pictures in Houston

Houston Family Photography

Each month I am exploring Houston weather and timing for family photos. December is finishing out the year as we explore the pros and cons of booking your family session during the last month of the year.

December in Houston can be a toss up- I feel like I probably say that with every post, but our weather is fickle at best. According to google, the average high for Houston in December is 63° with the average low being 43°. There have been Christmases spent in shorts and tank tops, and then there have been ones spent bundled up. It’s really hard to tell exactly what it will be but we do tend to see less rain for December (which is great for reschedules).

Let’s dive into the pros and cons of family pictures in December!

Pros for Photos in December

  • If we are going to get any fall colors at all, this is when it tends to happen! While everyone else got their fall pop in October, December is our time to shine! If you are lucky enough to have the week when the leaves turn, you will get beautiful colors like the ones in this post.
  • Less like to rain- while February is typically the most dry month, December sees less rainfall making a reschedule less likely.
  • Cooler temps mean sweater weather and fun layering that make your pictures feel more fall and more dynamic- without our famous Texas heat.
  • You probably won’t be sweating during your session (no promises) and likely less bugs to contend with.
  • October through December are my favorite seasons for light in Texas- there is just something so *chef’s kiss* about it! It’s so pretty whether it’s overcast or sunny.
  • December is very much a feel good month with thoughts of family and time together. It just makes sense to get loved up with the people you cherish most.

Cons for Photos in December

  • The biggest one that comes to the top of my mind is Christmas cards- if you have a specific deadline you are trying to meet to print your cards or get them out, you may be cutting it close booking a session in December. Check with your photographer to make sure of their delivery times during this busy season.
  • It is a busy season- between sickness, holidays, kids parties and events, and family time, it can be the most difficult and least flexible time of the year for you and your photographer. Try to remain flexible and open if something doesn’t quite go the way you had planned or hoped.
  • December is a popular month and it tends to book up the fastest. If you are dreaming of a December session for family photos or that is just the best time for your family, be sure to book ahead.

Whether December is the month you are aiming for or the month that family photos just happened, I would conclude that it’s a great one for family photos!
This family rocked their session- from what they wore to the stunning fall foliage that we were blessed with for their pictures. Such a stunning family session!
