Is March The Best Month For Family Photos?

Houston Family Photographer

Next up in our month-by-month guide to Houston weather and family photos is March!

March is my favorite for a lot of reasons- it’s my birthday month (yippee!), but more importantly, it’s the month of rebirth! We may not have a spectacular fall display, but we make up for it with splendid spring temps and an explosion of wildflowers and new greens.

March Family Photos

  • This month tends to be a frenzy of activity. For me, it is normal booked out by Christmas from the previous year. (I know!!) Make sure to plan ahead if you are eager to book this popular spring month.

  • Sometimes we get a smidge over anxious to embrace March while dreaming of spring, but be cautious. We don’t start to see green and life and spring flowers until mid to end of March.

  • We have significantly warmed up by this stage- early March is still struggling to come to life, but the temps slowly rise and the sun comes out in abundance. Average temperature for Houston in March is about 70. Still very pleasant ahead of our brutal summer weather- another reason we love March so much!

  • With warmer weather comes more critters. Yeahhh….our famous mosquitos are back. Bugs are out and here to stay. Not to be forgotten- snakes. I know, I know. I try not to use the “s”-word” too often but it’s a real threat when dealing with overgrown grassy areas and clumps of flowers like bluebonnets. Make sure you have prepared for the return of critters.

  • Bluebonnets!! These fickle flowers are the reason March is so highly desired. But pro-tip! If you aren’t into the chase, I will be highlighting the best months for other wildflowers, so don’t fret! Bluebonnets are cute unpredictable. Where they once grew, they stop. Maybe a great spot is now a new shopping strip. One year they sprouted early, the next late. They are so hard to predict, so make sure to bring your patience and flexibility to your session.

  • Time change happens in March so be careful. While I love tat we get more daylight hours, sessions start to push to later times in the late afternoon and evening. If you have littles, be careful when planning and look at sunset times.

Obviously, March wins our hearts for a lot of reasons. It’s easy to see why we love it so much! If you are after this beautiful month for a session, make sure to plan ahead and be ready for the flexibility required to get these stunning state flowers.
