What To Wear At Your Family Session

Planning outfits for your family session can be downright stressful. I used to want a client closet just to solve the problem, but I found that ultimately I preferred diversity and individual styles to shine through. It’s hard to do when you are limited by a closet of specific items. Sure, there are benefits to having some clothing on hand, but in general I love when your style shines and shows your personality.
So what is the best way to plan family outfits?
- My biggest tip would be to look at the portfolio of the photographer you are interested in- see if there is a common thread and if you match style-wise with their look. Imagine their work in your home, on your walls and with your things. When you do this, you will know if you are a match instantly!
- Ask your photographer- many photographers have a style that lends itself to specific colors. You may notice a common thread in their work. They should be able to guide you on the best colors to choose from based on their style.
- Start with mom first- you knew it was coming but it’s the truth. You are always last on the list, mama. Find the piece that makes you feel amazing and build everything around that. Not sure where to start for even yourself? Read on…
- Use my style guide!! I never tell a client WHAT to wear (mostly because I want you to feel comfortable) but I am always here to help. I have a list of shops I LOVE and trust, and if that still doesn’t do it for you, don’t fret. I use Style and Select and every ANP client has access to it for free. Sprinkle in some neutrals- they go with everything and will help keep you cool if the Texas heats gets to you. My styling tool automatically suggests good neutrals to balance your outfits.
Avoid neon colors- I love some good pops of warm and bold colors, but let’s leave the neons at home. When in doubt, just ask!
Add a sweater, jacket, scarf, hat or vest- instant texture and that is always a good thing!
Consider shoes on and off! I love when families kick off their shoes to explore. If you aren’t a shoes off type of family, no big deal! Make sure you plan what to wear on those toes too!
What are some of your favorite ways to jazz up an outfit? With your photographer at your side, you are going to look amazing no matter what. Make sure to include them as you make decisions on the pieces and ultimately trust what feels best and most comfortable for you.
